Does This Sound Familiar?

Picture this

It’s a beautiful day outside. The sun is shining, birds are chirping, and there is a slight breeze. But there’s one problem: you don’t have time to enjoy it. That’s right: it’s Monday. You wake up, look at the time, and suddenly realize that you have 1 hour to get ready for work. So, you jump out of bed, skip breakfast, change into your work attire, and then get into your car. But guess what? Your car has broken down! Perfect time for this to happen right?! After fiddling with the car a little bit, you realize that you’re not going to be driving this anytime soon. Now, you call your colleagues to see if anyone is able to pick you up. However, they’re in as much of a hurry as you are, so you aren’t able to contact them. Running out of options, you do the only thing you can do. You go to the nearest bus stop, wait for the bus to come by, and then ride the bus to work. Due to the increased amount of time it takes to travel in busses, you arrive late anyway. And as if you weren’t feeling bad enough already, your boss calls you to his/her office and gives you a hard time for being late. Since you are late, you’re behind on your work. So you spend the entire day working, both in the office and at home. You’re so busy that you ignore your friends and family for the rest of the day, you stay up late to keep working and then go to sleep only to do exactly the same thing over again.

Creating Balance: Sleep

Are We Getting Enough Sleep?

According to Sleep For Kids, “As day turns to night, your brain makes a chemical called melatonin (mel-a-TONE-in) that makes you sleepy.”

But you’re not here for scientific terms are you? Sleeping is how we restore our energy in order to keep our bodies in working order for the next day. We need at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep in order to function properly. But we aren’t getting enough of it are we? While others choose to stay awake for binging their favourite T.V. shows, us workers have to stay awake for doing productive things, such working the night shift and working on important business cases. We feel the need to take extra time overnight because we think we might not be able to do enough in the day. That is understandable (especially if you are a career oriented person) since this is your way of making a living. However, not sleeping enough has many surprising effects that can limit your productivity.

Lack of sleep can affect you in the following ways:

  • Sleep Loss Dumbs You Down
  • Sleep Deprivation Can Lead to Serious Health Problems
    • Heart problems (heart disease, heart attack, heart failure)
    • High blood pressure
    • Stroke
    • Diabetes
  • Sleep Loss Increases Depression
  • Lack of Sleep Ages Your Skin

You can get more sleep in the following ways:

  • Set a good daily sleeping time and plan your work-related activities accordingly
  • Try to get good exercise on a regular basis
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine
  • Don’t eat a heavy meal late in the day, but a light snack before bedtime is OK
  • Avoid naps after 3 p.m.

Creating Balance: Stress

What Is Stress?

The google definition: a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. Our definition: pure misery. There is so much going on in our lives that it can overwhelm us at times. Seeing no easy way out of our predicaments, we breakdown and start panicking. A lot of us experience this everyday, whether it may be a student, a part-time worker, or a full-time worker.

Regardless of age, sex, ethnicity and religion, no one is immune to the burdens of stress. Statistics demonstrate the widespread prevalence of this state of mind.

According to The American Institute of Stress:

  • About 33 percent of people report feeling extreme stress
  • 77 percent of people experience stress that affects their physical health
  • 73 percent of people have stress that impacts their mental health
  • 48 percent of people have trouble sleeping because of stress

Controlling Stress

Some factors that could be causing your stress:

  • Aren’t able to manage your workload
  • Relationship problems (friends, family, boss, etc.)
  • The hassle of going to work.
  • Exhaustion or fatigue

Some methods that can help decrease stress:

  • Create a specific schedule in order to balance the workload
  • Hang out with your friends and family so that they don’t feel bored, even if it’s for a short amount of time
  • Try to keep good relations with your boss (he/she is the one who pays you after all!)
  • Take a break every now and then; whether it’s for having lunch, interacting with your colleagues, or just to take a deep breath and think over your current situation.
